Tvrtka Chromos Samobor je osnovana 1923. godine kao drugi pogon zagrebačkog Chromosa. Već prilikom otvorenja mislilo se o protupožarnoj preventivi, jer je u sklopu skladišta boja i lakova bio postavljen rezervoar za vodu kapaciteta 15 000 litara. Prvi podaci dežurstva su iz 1949. godine, a u to vrijeme je u tvornici djelovala vatrogasna milicija sa 6 zaposlenih vatrogasaca – čuvara, uz 24-satno dežurstvo. Zapovjednik je bio Josip Rezar, a članovi Planinić, Jelen, Krušec, Kos i Telišman. 1952. godine osnovano je Industrijsko zavodsko dobrovoljno vatrogasno društvo Chromos s 33 člana. Uprava tvornice bila je dužna brinuti o nabavi opreme i sprava te brinuti o osposobljavanju članova. 30. ožujka 1963. godine 14 članova uspješno je završilo školovanje za vatrogasca. Tako je bio do 1971., kada je radi povećanog obujma poslovanja uposleno 11 novih djelatnika, koje je referent zaštite od požara i zaštite na radu ing. Nenad Vrhovec uključio u rad DVD-a. Društvo je imalo podršku dr. Zdenka Bačića, kao i dr. Josipa Kušeca. Nabavljena je nova oprema i vatrogasni aparati, a 11 članova poslano je na školovanje. Kasnije su oni bili pokretačka snaga u povećanju broja članova. 5. ožujka 1972. na izvanrednoj skupštini Kombinata Chromos-Katran-Kutrilin donesena je odluka da se vatrogasci samoborskog pogona izdvoje iz kombinata, pa je 17. ožujka 1972. godine osnovano Industrijsko dobrovoljno vatrogasno društvo Chromos Samobor. Nakon desetak godina društvo broji 76 članova. Velika važnost pridaje se protupožarnoj preventivi. Oformljeno je natjecateljsko odjeljenje na poticaj pok. Vlade Domina i pok. Alojza Vrbančića, koji su uvježbavali i podržavali ekipu, koja postiže uspjehe na svim razinama vatrogasnih natjecanja, a bili su cijenjeni kao fer i sportska ekipa. Članovi DVD-a uključili su se i u rad s djecom u OŠ Bogumila Tonija, na inicijativu učiteljice Anice Lukinec. Tu su se isticali Zlatko Tresl i Zlatko Vrbančić.

Godine 1977. osnovana je profesionalna vatrogasna služba s 9 profesionalnih vatrogasaca u 24-satnom dežurstvu. Službom rukovodi ing. Nenad Vrhovac - referent zaštite od požara i zaštite na radu. S početkom rata 1991. godine 31 član DVD-a sudjeluje u obrani domovine, i, srećom, svi su se vratili živi. Po završetku rata nastavljaju se školovanja za zvanja i ekipa nastavlja s uvježbavanjima. 1995. osvaja 1. mjesto Zagrebačke županije te se plasira na II. državno natjecanje, koje je održano 1996. godine na Kantridi u Rijeci. Od 56 ekipa zauzeli su 28 mjesto. Nakon privatizacije, 2000. godine tvrtku preuzima većinski dioničar Mato Palić, koji nastavlja proizvodnju i pomaže rad DVD-a. Tada dolazi do velikog osipanja članstva zbog umirovljenja članova i gašenja profesionalne službe. Djelatnici su raspodijeljeni na druge poslove i radne zadatke. Godine 1998. osnovana je sekcija za izlete, koju sve do danas uspješno vodi Stjepan Bošković, a od 2017. i Robert Šoić, pod motom "Upoznajmo domovinu". Društvo je u okviru svojih mogućnosti uključeno u rad Vatrogasne zajednice Grada Samobora te sudjeluje na manifestacijama u organizaciji Grada, kao što je Festival kotlovine, na kojem 2022. osvaja i 1. mjesto u spremanju kotlovine. U povodu 70. godišnjice izrađen je i amblem DVD-a. Dosadašnji predsjednici IDVD-a Chromos bili su: dr. Josip Kušec, ing. Rajko Simić, ing. Vlado Knežević, ing. Marijan Mežnarić, ing. Leon Mahović, ing. Jurica Hedžet, ing. Ivo Gugić, ing. Mislav Vrbos, a trenutno je ing. Mato Palić. Društvo danas broji 20 članova i članica. Svih ovih godina požara je bilo, no većina je pogašena pravodobno vlastitim snagama, dok je za neke bila potrebna pomoć JVP-a Grada Samobora. Važno je da nikad nije bilo ljudskih žrtava niti veće materijalne štete.

Chromos Samobor was founded in 1923 as the second production facility of Zagreb-based Chromos. Fire prevention was considered from the very beginning, as a 15,000-litre water reservoir was installed within the paint and varnish storage area. The first records of a permanent fire watch date back to 1949, when the factory maintained a fire brigade consisting of six employed firefighter-guards providing 24-hour duty. The brigade was commanded by Josip Rezar, while its members were Planinić, Jelen, Krušec, Kos and Telišman. In 1952, the Chromos Industrial Volunteer Fire Brigade was established with 33 members. The factory management was responsible for procuring firefighting equipment and appliances, as well as ensuring the training of its members. On 30 March 1963, fourteen members successfully completed firefighter training. This system remained in place until 1971, when the expansion of production required the employment of 11 new workers. Fire Protection and Occupational Safety Officer Nenad Vrhovec, B.Eng., involved these employees in the activities of the Volunteer Fire Brigade. The Society enjoyed the support of Dr. Zdenko Bačić and Dr. Josip Kušec. New firefighting equipment and extinguishers were acquired, and another 11 members were sent for professional training. They later became the driving force behind the Society’s growing membership.

On 5 March 1972, an extraordinary assembly of the Chromos–Katran–Kutrilin Combine decided to separate the firefighters of the Samobor plant from the parent organization. Consequently, on 17 March 1972, the Chromos Samobor Industrial Volunteer Fire Brigade was officially established. Within a decade, the Society had grown to 76 members. Considerable emphasis was placed on fire prevention. At the initiative of the late Vlado Domin and Alojz Vrbančić, a competition team was formed. They trained and supported the firefighters, who achieved outstanding results at all levels of firefighting competitions and earned a reputation as a fair and sportsmanlike team. Members of the Brigade also became actively involved in working with children at Bogumil Toni Primary School, following the initiative of teacher Anica Lukinec. Among those who made a particularly valuable contribution were Zlatko Tresl and Zlatko Vrbančić. In 1977, a professional fire service was established, consisting of nine full-time firefighters providing 24-hour duty. The service was headed by Nenad Vrhovec, B.Eng., Fire Protection and Occupational Safety Officer. With the outbreak of the Croatian War of Independence in 1991, 31 members of the Volunteer Fire Brigade participated in the defence of Croatia. Fortunately, all of them returned home safely. After the war, professional training continued and the competition team resumed regular practice. In 1995, the team won first place in Zagreb County, qualifying for the Second National Firefighting Competition, held in 1996 at Kantrida Stadium in Rijeka. Competing against 56 teams, they achieved an excellent 28th place. Following the company’s privatization in 2000, the majority shareholder Mato Palić took over the company, continued production and remained a strong supporter of the Volunteer Fire Brigade. However, the Society experienced a significant decline in membership due to retirements and the dissolution of the professional fire service, with former firefighters being reassigned to other duties within the company. In 1998, an excursion section was established, successfully led by Stjepan Bošković, and since 2017 jointly by Robert Šoić, under the motto “Let’s Get to Know Our Homeland.” Within its capabilities, the Society actively participates in the activities of the Samobor City Firefighting Association and regularly takes part in events organized by the City of Samobor, including the traditional Festival of Kotlovina, where it won first prize in 2022 for preparing the best kotlovina. On the occasion of its 70th anniversary, the Society introduced its official emblem. The presidents of the Chromos Samobor Industrial Volunteer Fire Brigade have been: Dr. Josip Kušec, Rajko Simić, B.Eng., Vlado Knežević, B.Eng., Marijan Mežnarić, B.Eng., Leon Mahović, B.Eng., Jurica Hedžet, B.Eng., Ivo Gugić, B.Eng., Mislav Vrbos, B.Eng., while the current president is Mato Palić, B.Eng. Today, the Society has 20 male and female members. Throughout its history, a number of fires have occurred within the company, but most were successfully extinguished by the Society’s own members, while some required the assistance of the Samobor Public Fire Brigade. Most importantly, there have never been any fatalities or major material losses.
