DVD GAJ

The history of firefighting in Gaj dates back to 1907, when, on the initiative of several local residents, a firefighting unit was established, operating as a branch of DVD Vrbovec. DVD Gaj itself was founded in 1935. Its first leadership was elected at that time: Đuro Habijanec as president, Mato Hrgović as commander, Vid Drvenkar as secretary, and Ignac Pankretić as treasurer. After the Second World War, in 1946, the brigade expanded and became increasingly active. In 1948, a district firefighting competition was held, where the firefighters of Gaj won first place. Preparations for the construction of a fire station began in 1956, and the building was completed in 1958. The construction of the fire station increased the brigade’s activities, and its first motor pump, a “Savica”, was acquired. In 1971, work was carried out on the exterior façade of the fire station, while in 1975 a “Rosenbauer” fire pump was purchased. Under the command of Franjo Habijanec, members of DVD Gaj participated in dealing with the consequences of a catastrophic mid-air collision between two aircraft on September 10, 1976. One of the aircraft crashed in a field known as Krč near Gaj. The firefighters of Gaj received a letter of appreciation from the RSUP for their prompt response to the scene of the aircraft accident, as well as for their dedication, efforts, and contribution to extinguishing the fire and providing assistance. In 1979, DVD Gaj established a women’s section. Its commander was Marica Brlečić, Jela Tretinjak served as its leader, and Zorica Tretinjak as treasurer. In 1997, a children’s section was also established within the brigade. With the support of the then Minister of Agriculture, Božidar Pankretić, the Lura Group donated a 10,000-litre water tanker to DVD Gaj, marking the beginning of a new era in the brigade’s activities. Vatromenika converted the vehicle into a firefighting water tanker, and since 2005, the vehicle has been in service.
