Dobrovoljno vatrogasno društvo Johovec osnovano je 1954 godine u kući Bujić Mije. Tog dana okupili su se osnivači DVD-a i to: Bezjak Josip, Piškorić Josip, Babić Stjepan, Babić Mirko, Meštrović Stjepan, Bujić Stjepan, Rupčić Franjo, Piljek Milan, Horvat Stjepan, Rupčić Josip i dr. Od te godine pa do danas kroz društvo je prošlo 120 članova, što aktivnih što podupirajućih, dok je trenutno stanje u matičnoj knjizi 45 članova i to uglavnom aktivnih. Društvo se ponosi brojem školovanih časnika, vatrogasaca i vatrogasne mladeži, a posebno ženskim vatrogasnim odjeljenjem jedinim na području VZO Križ. Najbolji rezultati djelovanja postignuti su u preventivnom djelovanju što dokazuje i mali broj požara na području djelovanja. Društvo djeluje na području sela Johovec, ali po potrebi i na širem području Općine Križ, sa sjedištem u vatrogasnom domu u Johovcu. Prvu vatrogasnu opremu vatrogasci su nabavili velikim djelom vlastitim sredstvima članova i samih mještana sela Johovec, dok je manji dio sredstava dodjeljen od raznih sponzora. Tako je nabavljen pompni agregat "Rakovica" sa 4 usisne cijevi Ø 52 mm, 100 m tlačnih cijevi, jednu razdjelnicu i dvije mlaznice. Vatrogasna odijela su nabavljena isključivo sredstvima zarađenim radom samih vatrogasaca, čiščenjem kanala. Već 1966 godine počelo je sa izgradnjom novog vatrogasnog doma koji je dovršen i pušten u nužni rad kroz naredne tri godine. U periodu povoljne eksplatacije vatrogasnog doma, organizacijom vatrogasnih zabava i proslava, društvo doživljava svoj procvat, tako da je 1972. godine vlastitim sredstvima uz malu pomoć donatora kupljen pumpni agregat "Magirus" i "Honda" sa pratećom opremom.

The firemen's suits were purchased exclusively with the funds earned by the firefighters themselves, cleaning the canals. During the period of favorable exploitation of the fire station, with the organization of fire parties and celebrations, the society experienced its boom, so that in 1972, with its own funds, with a little help from donors, a pumping unit "Magirus" and "Honda" with accompanying equipment was purchased.
